Entrepreneur Sam Gelin’s first hotel project dresses up this sliver of NoMad. Despite a few design quirks, the modern, earthy interiors, attentive service, and on-site restaurant – steered by one of New York’s brightest culinary talents – nudge MADE into a brand-new category of luxury.
Situated in the trendy NoMad neighbourhood, the hotel is a 10-minute stroll from a host of the city’s top restaurants such as Eleven Madison Park, Friedman’s, and ABC Kitchen. Walk to the Empire State Building in less than five minutes and Macy’s at Herald Square in about seven. Meanwhile, the northern edge of Madison Square Park is only five blocks away, and you can be in Times Square in less than 15 minutes.
Find the 1 subway train within four blocks, and in less than eight minutes’ walk you’ll arrive at Penn Station, a terminal with six subway lines as well as New Jersey Transit and Amtrak service.
Style & character
A warm, zen-like energy unfolds as soon as you cross the threshold. Expect earthy luxury – tons of wood, light, and greenery melded with patches of pattern in handwoven fabrics. While there’s no ignoring the trendiness, MADE is trendy in the best way.
This boutique hotel boasts imaginative design and a wonderfully functional lobby space that appeals to all the senses. While you’re on the premises, you’ll feel as if you’ve trotted off to a modern lodge in the Hudson Valley or perhaps even a resort on the West Coast. But one step outside the front door and you’re in the heart of bustling NoMad.
Service & facilities
You’ll work hard to find better service or more pleasantry in any hotel anywhere. It’s rare to encounter such an approachable team of people in one of New York’s newest (and hippest) hotels, but you’ll find them here.
MADE offers guests plenty of space to mingle, eat, drink, work, and retreat. A coffee bar, lobby bar, restaurant, private patio for hotel patrons only, as well as a rooftop bar provide reason enough to spend your night out – in. Unfortunately for active travellers, there’s no fitness centre on site. Parking, however, is available for a fee.
- Room service
You’ll come upon a few quirks such as wall-mounted metal bars with several hangers instead of a closet, and one shallow drawer (might prove challenging for an extended stay) in the small, chic rooms. Tall windows, concrete ceilings, and sheer curtains over blackout shades provide light control and privacy. Low wood platforms hold incredibly comfy Leesa Sapira mattresses topped with luscious down pillows, all adorned in Frette linens.
Samsung televisions, bathrobes, luxurious bath amenities, minibars, and Revo SuperConnect multi-format deluxe table radios are standard throughout. Baths are fitted with handsome stone vessel sinks, but only a narrow patch of mirror for make-up and grooming. Some rooms feature balconies, and on higher floors, city views create a fabulous backdrop with the Empire State Building rising nearby.
Food & drink
MADE’s buzzed-about restaurant, Ferris, serves up seasonal fare that’s both rustic and elegant. Chef Greg Proechel is a risk-taker, avoiding the conventional with his offbeat interpretations, and of course, crafting every edible from scratch. Prices run high for portions – you’ll need at least three dishes to create a meal.
The grilled mackerel or the charred broccolini salad are a prelude to the star of the menu: Cotes de bouef – a medium-rare carved steak with all the fixings, artfully presented. An ambitious undertaking for the kitchen and eaters (it serves two), the meat is priced by the ounce. A lighter choice would be the duck breast or hake with clam broth. No matter what, save space for the chocolate mousse. It’s superb.
For breakfast, Proechel whips up charred avocado toast, slab bacon, and sweet potato pancakes. Juices are fresh-pressed. If you’re in the mood for eggs, go with fried or scrambled, not poached, as mine were barely lukewarm. If your time is limited, opt for a grab-and-go cup of Joe and croissant from Paper Coffee.
To imbibe, sip a fancy cocktail in the lobby, the restaurant bar, or Good Behavior – the rooftop tiki bar – which affords a fantastic perspective of the city.
